ITALY & FOOD – NUTRITIONAL CHALLENGES, AGRICULTURE, FOOD LOSSES & WASTE

This report is a study of the Italian agri-food system, based on the Food Sustainability Index. It reveals that Italians are some of the longest-lived people in the world, although obesity is an issue for both adults and children.

Italy is one of the largest agricultural producers in the European Union, but soil degradation is now a major concern.

Italy generates approximately 2.2 million tons of food waste every year, although it has put in place strong national policies to counter the phenomenon.

These aspects and others are explored, with the intention of raising awareness and building a conversation on the sustainability of the food system. A further aim is to promote change towards the achievement of the goals set in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (the SDGs).
