The challenge of achieving the SDGs involves the whole of society – from individual citizens to businesses and civil society organizations – and will over the years involve markets and the choices of companies, governments and institutions. The fundamental prerequisite to achieve the goals is organizations focusing their business strategy on corporate citizenship, i.e., their adoption of honest commercial practices, with fairness towards all interested parties and without damaging the community or the environment.
The food sector is increasingly aligning its practices with the SDGs and the Paris Climate Accords, to improve its financial, social, environmental and legal sustainability. It becomes clear that there remains a great deal of work to be done on sustainable development, especially with regard to sustainability reporting, which must become more systematic, detailed and useful for all stakeholders: companies, investors, civil society, and individual citizens.
